Coa river and its halted dam in northern Portugal. The valley, a world heritage site, holds some of the world's oldest petroglyphs (rock art). The prehistoric site attracted worldwide attention when plans to build a hydroelectric dam (left) across the Côa Valley threatened to submerge them but it wad forced to being halted in 1995 although a large number of the drawings were already underwater by that time.
