Mars at its brightest during opposition with the Earth. It appears here rising next to star Spica in Virgo from Cerro Armazones mountain in the Atacama Desert of Chile; the site chosen for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), an optical/infrared telescope with a 39.3 metre diameter primary mirror, the largest on Earth.
