Washington DC nightscapes. The White House has been the residence and workplace of US presidents since 1800s. In the background is the Washington Monument; an obelisk completed in 1884 to commemorate George Washington, the first American president. Made mainly of marble and granite, it is both the world's tallest stone structure and one of the world's tallest obelisk, standing about 555 feet (169 m) tall.
