Milky Way above Paranal   -  By: Babak A. Tafreshi

The Milky Way in the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius above the Cerro Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert, Chile. The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is the red cloud near the horizon, next to the Large Sagittarius Star Cloud (the brighter region of the Milky Way). The cloud is almost pointed toward the galactic center. Higher up in the sky are M6 and M7 star clusters at the tail of Scorpion. Two red emission nebulae at that area (image middle) are NGC 6334 or the Cat's Paw Nebula and NGC 6357 also known as the War and Peace Nebula. At 2,635 meters (8,645 ft) from sea level, with its dark and transparent sky, Paranal is home to the Very Large Telescope (VLT), operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). It is composed of four 8-metre telescopes and several 1-meter auxiliary telescopes (pictured here) which are important part of the VLT interferometer.
