Moments after the sunset, the Earth shadow and anticrepuscular rays form over La Palma, Canary Islands. On the top of La Palma large telescopes of Roque de los Muchachos Observatory at 2400 meters above see level are preparing for another night of exploration. There are about a dozen major telescopes on this excellent observing site. From this vantage point at the top of island (a 2400m peak) the edge of Caldera de la Taburiente covers the foreground. The 10-km wide volcanic crater (with walls tower 2000m over the caldera floor) dominates the northern part of the island. The caldera originated some 2 million years ago with a massive shield volcano. At the horizon the neighboring Tenerife island is visible on the left, marked by spectacular Teide volcano which reaches over 3700m above the ocean. Another Canary Island is visible on the right: La Gomera.
